Jamie A. Allen '14, '15 Black STEM Professional Advancement Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to help relieve the financial burden and reward African American students pursuing careers in vital professions where African Americans have traditionally been known to be inadequately represented. The ideal candidate strives to personally accomplish various levels of success, but also realizes the significance of reaching back to uplift others as they climb.

To qualify students must:

  • be accepted for or currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University (GVSU)
  • be at least an undergraduate sophomore enrolled 12 credit hours or more
  • have a declared major in the Seidman College of Business, the College of Health Science, Kirkhof College of Nursing, or the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing or with a major in science, legal studies or criminal justice
  • declare their African American racial status in their response to their admissions application form questions regarding their racial/ethnic origins
  • be making satisfactory academic progress (SAP)

Additional preference will be given to students who excel academically while simultaneously participating in voluntary events such as community service, mentoring, tutoring or others.

Financial need may be considered, and shall be demonstrated by the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Renewal – This scholarship may be renewed without reapplication provided the recipient continues to meet the qualifications stated above. The maximum award length is four semesters.
