Norman and Helen Gibson Geology Field Study Scholarship

The purpose of the Norman and Helen Gibson Geology Field Study Scholarship is to encourage and support undergraduate GVSU geoscience students in conducting scientific research.

  • Recipients must be enrolled as a full time student during the semester of application (Winter) and the Fall semester following the award period.
  • Candidates shall intend to engage in geology field-based or geoscience education research. Preference shall be given to students who articulate a sound and innovative scientific or educational objective, a clear plan, and likelihood of success as a geoscientist.
  • Recipient must secure a geology faculty mentor for the project.
  • Candidates and recipients shall be making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University and the Geology Department.

Evaluation for funding will be based on both the qualifications of the applicant and the quality of the proposed research project. Given equally meritorious applications, preference will be given to individuals who have not previously engaged in funded undergraduate research. Relative need may also be a factor. Only one proposal per review cycle may be submitted.
