William J. Meier in memory of Denise Meier
Denise Potuznik Meier was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend who passed away too young. One of her many passions was the Occupational Science & Therapy Program at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). She taught Occupational Therapy (OT) at Grand Valley for almost 20 years, starting when the program first began in 1996. She loved teaching, and her enthusiasm for OT inspired her students and co-workers. Climbing on her “Soap box” to impact a particularly important piece of wisdom was just one of the many teaching techniques for which Denise will be remembered.
Although is would be impossible to choose Denise’s favorite part of teaching at Grand Valley, the international fieldwork trips to Guatemala held a special place in her heart. The trips give students a unique learning opportunity, and may told Denise it was their most memorable experience. But the trips do more than help develop well-rounded OTs, they also provide valuable services to the wonderful people of Guatemala. Denise and her students helped hundreds of families by teaching techniques they can use long after the trip is over.
Denise wanted as many students as possible to have the opportunity to do an international fieldwork trip. She saw the trips as a perfect way to grow one’s passion for OT and give back to the world. We hope this scholarship will help make Denise’s dream come true.
