The Huizenga Family
Paul A. Huizenga was born and raised on a farm in Jamestown, Michigan. After taking degrees from Hope College and the University of Michigan, he joined the Biology Department of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1966 with the nascent Grand Valley State Colleges. For the following thirty-six years, Professor Huizenga supported and participated in the maturing of the institution which became Grand Valley State University.
Professor Huizenga’s passion lay in the teaching function of being a professor. He enjoyed his interaction with committed students and eventually grew to spend much of his time assisting them and teacher assistants in the classroom. Professor Huizenga believed that classroom instruction and research were equally important components of a university’s goal.
In honor of a lifetime’s commitment to teaching others and in commemoration of his retirement from teaching in 2003, Professor Huizenga’s wife, Ardis and their children have established this scholarship to assist others committed to teaching biology.
