Ruth M. Perry

Ruth M. Perry

Mr. Ross W. Perry, an executive for companies that produced pre-paint, steel coatings, and his wife, Ruth M. Perry, a California elementary speech therapy teacher, created, in 1994, a _Charitable Remainder Unitrust _which paid them annual income over their lifetimes. Mr. Perry died in 1999 and the trust income continued to be paid to Mrs. Perry. Rather than continuing to receive income payments from the Unitrust, Mrs. Perry released her income interest in the trust thus freeing the trust corpus to Grand Valley State University for the creation and funding of a scholarship. The scholarship specified in the trust was to benefit students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree from GVSU. During her years of enduring cancer, Mrs. Perry was given significant relief from Physical Therapists trained at Grand Valley. Consistent with the interests of both Ross and Ruth Perry, two scholarships will make awards equally in two areas: core sciences and physical therapy.

Impact

“This scholarship and others like this are really important to me, because they let me know that my hard work is paying off. They also have made me realize the impact that financial support can have on a student’s education, and have inspired me to look for ways in the future that I can help students financially, and otherwise.” -Tanner Rufenacht, Junior
