Dr. Arnold is the Vice President for Inclusion and Equity at Grand Valley State University. The First Generation Urban Schools Scholarship was established by her to provide opportunities for students who are the first in their families to attend college and may receive little encouragement and financial support to attend.
First generation students are at a disadvantage when preparing to attend college; and may not have access to college graduates to help navigate them through the financial aid and application process. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, high school students whose parents never enrolled in college are less likely to enroll in postsecondary education. The First Generation Urban Schools Scholarship will provide financial assistance and encourage students to utilize resources and networks on campus that will help them achieve their goals.
