Howard Sutton

Howard Sutton

This scholarship was created to honor and memoralize Ira Brad a Grand Valley State University student who, during a hiatus from his studies, was killed in a work-related accident in 1972. Howard Sutton, uncle of Ira Brad, was instrumental in initial funding for the Ira Brad Memorial Scholarship. Ira’s younger brother, Louis, recalled,

“He was taken from us much too soon and our family and many friends were deeply affected by his passing. My relationship with him was typical, we were three years apart in age and had our share of battles over the years. When we went off to Grand Valley (from Chicago) I vividly recall our relationship changing to friendship. He was a unique person, and I have always had a desire to do some good for others in his memory, and this scholarship in his name is what I’ve always thought about. If we can make just one student’s life a little easier through this scholarship, I will be thrilled.”
