Family, Friends and Colleagues of Richard Hodsdon Sr.
The Dick Nelson Memorial Sports Broadcasting Scholarship was established in memory of Richard Hodsdon Sr.- better recognized by his broadcasting name- Dick Nelson. He was the “Voice of Laker Football” for 37 years and will be fondly remembered as an important part of Grand Valley State University’s (GVSU) success in athletics and a special member of the Laker family. He and his wife Lori had a deep and special bond with Laker athletics and took tremendous pride in their association with the University.
What began in 1977 as Dick helping GVSU get its radio broadcast off the ground ended up in decades of memories including his signature “Touchdown Lakers!” call. Dick never tried to tone down his loyalty to GVSU and wore his critics “homer” status with pride and unabashed enthusiasm.
Dick was prolific during his career with multiple TV and radio programs both locally and nationally but always took a special pride in the art of radio. He felt it took a unique talent to describe a picture to an audience solely by using ones voice verses complimenting an image on television.
