Family, Friends and Colleagues of Frances Anne Kelleher
Established in loving memory of Frances Anne Kelleher, by colleagues, friends and her spouse Prof. Susan Swartzlander. Professor Frances Anne Kelleher was a wonderful scholar, teacher, mentor and leader who taught with passion for 26 years at Grand Valley State University. She was an assistant Dean, Chair of the History Department, and a caring colleague. She fought for women’s rights on campus and equality on many fronts. She was a popular professor who taught students to look deeper within to succeed in their courses and lives. She took the time to truly listen to colleagues and students and learned from them, as they learned from her. She was an inspiration to all.
The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students studying history or social studies with the costs of studying abroad to enhance their education at GVSU. Professor Kelleher’s time as a student studying in Paris, France, represented a turning point for her personality and as a scholar that greatly enriched her life from that point forward. Throughout her career, she encouraged students to study abroad because of her own experience as a student studying abroad.
