Dr. Janet G. Brashler
The Mnomen Native American Scholarship was established by Dr. Janet G. Brashler, Professor and Curator of Anthropology at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Dr. Brashler has taught and conducted research related to Pre-Columbian North America peoples and contemporary Native peoples. Her interests in anthropology include ceramic analysis, environmental anthropology, archaeology of the Easter U.S., and social justice issues. The name of the scholarship comes from the word Anishnabemowin meaning wild rice, which grows on the lakes, and we are all Lakers! This scholarship will continue her legacy of mentoring students, especially Native American students, who otherwise would not be able to attend GVSU.
