Donald and Barbara VanderJagt
The donors recognize that there are two activities on campus that take a considerable amount of time and commitment, namely, majoring in mathematics and participating in athletics. A significant number of students do either of these; a considerably smaller number of students do both. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and reward students who both major in mathematics and participate in intercollegiate athletics.
The donors, Donald and Barbara VanderJagt, are long-time supporters of Grand Valley State University. Dr. VanderJagt, Professor of Mathematics, has been a faculty member at GVSU since 1964 and served 25 years as Chair of the department. Mrs. VanderJagt has taught 6th grade in a local school system for over 30 years, having received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees from GVSU. The VanderJagt’s four children are all successful professionals; three graduated from Grand Valley, the fourth transferred from GVSU to another institution to obtain a degree not then available at Grand Valley. Dr. and Mrs. VanderJagt have six grandchildren.
The donors recognize that the outstanding mathematics major and the person who excels in an athletic sport will each be recognized in their respective units. The intention of this scholarship is to recognize student-athletes who may not be outstanding in either area, but still are committed to both areas and spend considerable time and energy to stay competitive both in the classroom and on the playing field.
