In Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dematic’s history includes the former Rapistan Inc. that began in 1939 with James R. Sebastian, Sr. and Lloyd C. Backart. After several mergers, Rapistan has been known as Dematic since June 2006. James Sebastian, Sr. is credited with starting the Engineering program at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). He saw the need in the community and wanted GVSU to be the one to start a program to benefit the region.
