Beatrice "Bea"(Aldrink) Idema

The Philip Peter Versluis Criminal Justice Scholarship was established by Beatrice “Bea” (Aldrink) Idema in loving memory of Philip Peter Versluis, her brother-in-law. Philip was a devoted family man and community leader in West Michigan. Philip and his wife, Joyce “Joy” are long-time supporters and friends of Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Philip, who passed in 2017, had a long career with the Kent County Juvenile Court, eventually retiring for the role as Director. He also spent his weekends continuing to work at his family’s farm. Philip attended Calvin College before enlisting and serving in the army, then studied Criminal Justice and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s from Michigan State University when he returned. Philip and Joy raised their family in Walker, Michigan. Joy was linked to Grand Valley through her sister Bea Idema, and her service as a trustee of the Bill and Bea Idema Foundation, which played a critical role in the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons in Allendale. Philip and Joy initiated the Philip and Joyce Versluis Endowed Scholarship to support business majors in the Seidman College of Business, and had many ties to Grand Valley through Joy’s family. This scholarship will continue Philip’s legacy and assist students in criminal justice who demonstrate financial need.
