Beatrice "Bea" (Aldrink) Idema
Beatrice (Aldrink) Idema in loving memory of her husband William W. Idema established the William “Bill” W. Idema Physics Scholarship. The Idema name is a familiar one in West Michigan and is often associated with great philanthropy and leadership. William “Bill” W. Idema was the son of Steelcase co-founder Walter Idema and his wife Mary. Bill, who passed in 2008, and his wife Beatrice “Bea” have actively supported many organizations throughout West Michigan that enrich the lives of its citizens. Bill had an uncanny ability to grasp concepts related to physics. Bill and Bea gave of their time and money to support many causes in the Grand Rapids area, from faith-based organizations, to Jon Ball Zoo, to projects aimed at helping youth and education.
After Bill’s passing, Bea continued to carry on his philanthropic legacy. The Bill and Bea Idema Foundation supported the construction of the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, which named a classroom after the foundation, and played a major role in making construction possible for the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons. This scholarship will continue his legacy and assist students studying Physics at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and who demonstrate need.
